One of our favorite type of sessions to do are Senior Portraits. It is endlessly fascinating to work with young adults as they navigate through this transitional period in their lives.
Our Senior Portrait sessions focus in to capture the individual personality and interests of the client. Earlier this spring, we had the pleasure of working with Cody – a Senior at Clayton Valley High School who plays both Varsity Football and Lacrosse. For his photo session he wanted to get off the field and into nature, so we scheduled the session for one of our very favorite East Bay Parks to shoot in – Redwood Regional Park in Oakland.
One of the reasons why Redwood Regional Park is one of our preferred local parks to shoot in is because there is a variety of natural backdrops and settings all within a reasonably small area. As we did not have any major outfit or “look” changes during this shoot, we were able to get a large selection of photos to choose from all within a one hour portrait session.
Fun fact: Cody designed his own Letterman jacket design to highlight both Football and Lacrosse!
Our main goals for this session were to keep the portraits casual and fun, while highlighting his time and efforts as a member of both the Varsity Football and Varsity Lacrosse teams. We create a relaxed shooting environment to make our clients feel comfortable – even when shooting out in public.
We are pleased to offer portrait photography sessions at Redwood Regional Park in Oakland, CA year round. One hour, two hour, and half day sessions are available with no additional permit fees. Sessions must be scheduled at least one week in advance so we can secure permissions with the park. This location is highly desirable for Senior Portraits, Head Shots, Personal Branding, and Family Portrait sessions.
Having worked with Katherine before I was excited to have the chance to work with her again. Our goal was to get some casual, natural looking photos for her to use on various social media outlets, and for personal branding and professional use. She wanted to shoot outside – in nature, so we recommended a few of our favorite East Bay parks and settled on the Alvarado Park area of Wildcat Canyon.
Wildcat Canyon is one of my favorite East Bay Parks to work in due to the large variety of background options to choose from in a relatively small area. This park has trails along Alvarado Creek, through Eucalyptus and Redwood trees, and grassy lawns – all accessible with a short and relatively easy hike. This means we spend less time hiking, and more time taking photos, which gives you more variety of images to choose from.
I do a lot of work with people looking to enhance their professional and social media presence with portrait photography, and love working with clients to design a shoot which fits their needs and reflects their unique personality. As a photographer, I have always found it interesting how well you can get to know someone in just a few hours.
Arthi and Rishi were no exception – but their kind nature made it especially easy! They chose Rios-Lovell winery for their Engagement Party – in the Livermore wine region. Having shot a wedding there in 2011, I was excited since they have many gorgeous shooting locations – from vineyards, to fountains, a pretty garden area with and adorable bridge… and a little patio area with European flair!
Wisely, they chose to do their engagement portraits in the hours before the party started, while they we dressed and ready for action.
By the time we finished the engagement portraits, family had arrived. We gathered the families for groups of portraits. This is something we’ve been seeing more of lately – taking time at your engagement party to do some family portraits – and we think is a positive trend! For those families who don’t get to see one another very often, it’s a great way to be sure to have beautiful memories to hold on to.
Arthi and Rishi are very talented, ambitious, and inspiring individuals – and I’m not the only one who thinks so! In fact, Rishi was featured in a recent documentary called Urban Fruit – – You can watch it on Amazon Prime. Their commitment to organic farming and sustainability will help us reawaken our connection to the land!
We could not have asked for a better Valentine’s Day than we had at Port Costa’s Burlington Hotel. We took over the beautiful “Oh Kaye” room for a dress up photo set which was so much fun! It was a delightful evening of colorful characters, chamber pop music from Prince de Dame (our new favorite band!), performance art and emotional stock exchange, fabulous wine, sweet treats and so much more! All of this in the beautiful, full of history, creatively cozy Burlington Hotel! Definitely an amazing place – if you’ve never been, or haven’t been in a while we highly recommend checking it out.
Pet photography is always a fun challenge! Fun because I get to spend an hour or two with your furry, four legged loved one, challenging because, well… they don’t always take direction very well! So, I try to let your pet just be their awesome self and start off slow so they can get used to me and the camera.
Whether we do the shoot outdoors or in studio is up to you and depends on what type of shot you are looking for. This little guy above would be right at home on a Christmas card, don’t you think? Well behaved dogs are always welcome in the studio! If you are looking for something more natural your backyard or their favorite park are also great choices!
I consider my own pets to be members of my family, and a lot of my clients feel the same way about their furry friends so I give as much care to a pet session as I would to a family portrait or kids photo session.
Cats are a little more challenging to work with than dogs. I love dogs, but I’m truly a cat person at heart! To avoid the stress many cats feel when they are asked to travel I recommend doing cat sessions in your home. My studio is mobile, and there is no extra travel fee for most Bay Area locations. Luna’s owner took the pictures from our session and turned them into a great little book for his wife, which she loved! Let me know how I can help you capture the spirit of your furry friends!
