In Studio Newborn Photography + Tips for Your Newborn Photo Shoot! Alameda, CA

newborn photography Alameda CA

Newborns are so tiny and sweet that it should be no surprise they are one of our favorite types of sessions to do. We recommend newborn photography sessions be scheduled within the first 14 days after birth to be sure we capture that smallest stage of life as babies grow and change so fast!

We got to photograph Baby Ryan at 12 days old and had the best time with this little cutie. He would drift in and out of sleepiness so we were able to get a nice mix of sleeping and awake shots.

Our newborn photography sessions can be booked both in home/on location, as well as at our Alameda studio. We photographed Ryan over the winter, making him our first newborn session at the new studio – pretty exciting!  The new room is great for photographing babies – big enough to work in, but small enough to warm up easily for baby’s comfort. Plus a comfy couch for mom and dad to chill on while we work!

For this shoot we mainly focused on the classic, traditional unclothed baby, but we also spent some time photographing Ryan in this adorable outfit his mom crocheted. newborn baby yawning studio photography

We also took time to get some sweet family photos.

Ryan and his family were so lovely to photograph and we are so glad they chose us to document his first days!

  • Schedule early! Ideally the session would be held within the first 7-14 days for maximum newborn squishyness!
  • Warm the room! A nice balmy 80 degrees is best since baby will be spending a lot of time naked, and we want them to be comfy and warm. If we are working at your home please start to preheat your space 30 minutes before our arrival. This is probably THE most important tip for a great session.
  • Personalize your photo shoot! We always encourage you to bring cute outfits, hats, headbands, blankets, and other personal mementos to incorporate into our session.
  • Relax! There is nothing your baby will do that we haven’t seen before so don’t stress if your baby fusses, needs to take a break to feed, or pees on us. We use natural, gentle posing techniques so your baby will be comfortable. Their safety is our top priority so you can sit back and relax, knowing you are right there if we need you!

Hey Baby! San Francisco Bay Area Newborn and Infant Photography

Baby in a reindeer costume

A business head shot client (and marketing expert!) recently asked us where we saw the most growth in the business during the past year. Our answer without any hesitation was babies, and honestly, we would not have had nearly as much fun in 2012 without these sweet cuddle bugs as clients!

Clayton is a bit of a “baby whisperer” and we wanted to share a few of our all time favorite babies with you!

A few tips for a smooth sailing infant session:

1) We like to shoot newborns mid-morning. We try to schedule these sessions early in the day, and ask moms and dads to keep baby awake until the session, with a feeding right before we start shooting. This helps baby be a good sleeper during the session and allows us to more easily pose them into those sweet, all curled up and super cute poses like this:

2) Allow plenty of time for your infant’s session! We recommend booking a one hour session for infants – newborns up to the toddler stage. Keep in mind that this one hour session could take 2-3 hours, as we are not counting the time needed for diaper changes, feedings, and the much needed “mommy comfort time”! Each baby is different and we let them dictate the flow of the session. If we wrap up in an hour, great, but if baby needs a break or two (or twelve!), we have built time for that into our appointment book, and encourage you to do the same!

3) Let us take the lead. This is important, so I’ll say it again: Let us take the lead! A lot of times parents get nervous when they feel like baby is not cooperating with us for the shoot. They fret, apologize to us for all the crying, and try so hard to get everything back on schedule. The best advise we have for parents during these sessions is sit back, relax and TRUST US! We’ll let you know when we need help to calm your little bundle of joy down. Most of the time we’re able to swaddle them up, spend a few minutes walking with them and they’re calm, happy and ready to get back to the shoot! Your baby can tell if you are anxious and will feed into that nervous energy. Sit back, put your feet up and know that baby’s in good hands. Did we mention that Clayton’s a baby whisperer?

4) Come prepared! What this really means depends on the age and personality of your child but bare minimum please bring enough diapers and your supplies for feedings for at least 3 hours. Bring a few different changes of clothes in case of spit ups or diaper explosions. And please, bring things to personalize the shoot to make it 100% unique to you! We have our own props we’ll be using but it really is the things you bring that help make these photos special. If you’re into funny hats, or girly headbands bring them with you and we’ll definitely incorporate it into the shoot. Is there a special blanket from auntie, or something special that has been passed down through your family? Bring it along! While we may not be able to use every cute hat or outfit that you bring with you during the session we will absolutely incorporate anything of personal significance. Our goal for the session is to create beautiful images of your bundle of joy that you will cherish for a lifetime.

Baby Makayla – Newborn Photography – Orinda,CA

We have been shooting a lot of babies recently and it’s been a lot of fun. We did our session with newborn Makayla at her grandparent’s house in Orinda. What a cutie pie! She is less than two weeks old in these!

Makayla is such a sweet baby and we had a lot of fun dressing her up with all her fun accessories. We also got some family photos with her big sister and parents.

We offer newborn and infant photography sessions at our Alameda studio or on location. In home sessions are available. Newborn sessions occur within the first 10-12 days. We recommend contacting us before your due date to schedule so we can be sure to capture the sweetness of baby’s first few days.

Baby Stella & Family

Have we mentioned how much we love babies? Yes, babies and children can be challenging to shoot, but they’re really cute and these sessions are always a lot of fun! Last week we packed up our mobile studio and headed out to Castro Valley to shoot baby Stella and her family.

Stella is a real cutie pie! She loves crawling around and is just starting to learn how to walk. Her brother, Stanley was very sweet with her and if she would start to cry, he would lean in and give her a little kiss!

Doing a session with two kids under 3 years old is definitely a work out! Stella and Stanley both have so much energy, and it is almost always hard to get kids to focus that energy into getting a good photo. We try to keep it light and fun and in the end this was a really great shoot!

Baby Claire

I don’t mean to brag, but babies really like me. Really! Infant sessions are both fun and challenging as you have to be patient and let the baby set the pace. They don’t take direction so it’s best to just go with the flow.

Luckily Claire was a natural. She had a good nature which made her really easy to work with, plus she is cute as a button. And she liked me. A lot.

Modeling is hard work so we let Claire take a snack break – during which she fell asleep. We took advantage of this to do some of the tummy poses she did not want to do while awake. She’s a sound sleeper so it wasn’t too hard to move her into position.

She has a very sweet smile, don’t you think? But, she’s also not afraid to show off her more serious side.

Infant sessions take place at my Alameda studio. Here we can control the lighting and temperature to keep baby warm and happy. There is also a bigger selection of backgrounds and props here. However, we can also bring our mobile studio to your home if you have a room with enough open space to set up lights and the background.
