Having worked with Katherine before I was excited to have the chance to work with her again. Our goal was to get some casual, natural looking photos for her to use on various social media outlets, and for personal branding and professional use. She wanted to shoot outside – in nature, so we recommended a few of our favorite East Bay parks and settled on the Alvarado Park area of Wildcat Canyon.
Wildcat Canyon is one of my favorite East Bay Parks to work in due to the large variety of background options to choose from in a relatively small area. This park has trails along Alvarado Creek, through Eucalyptus and Redwood trees, and grassy lawns – all accessible with a short and relatively easy hike. This means we spend less time hiking, and more time taking photos, which gives you more variety of images to choose from.
I do a lot of work with people looking to enhance their professional and social media presence with portrait photography, and love working with clients to design a shoot which fits their needs and reflects their unique personality. One of my favorite locations in Alameda for family portrait photography is Crab Cove. This is especially true for families with young children, as there is plenty of onsite parking, and a large, safe area for the kids to explore while getting their photos taken. As a photographer, I appreciate the wide variety of backgrounds available in close proximity to each other. This means we can make the most of our session time by taking lots of photos without having to spend much time walking to various locations in order to get a variety of backgrounds.
Crab Cove is a great place to shoot year round – this session took place during the Fall season, after most of the leaves had fallen from the trees. We took advantage of this, and let the kids have some play time with the leaves, which we, of course, captured in their photos!
For families who can’t decide if they want to do their family portraits near the water, with the trees, or in a grassy park setting, Crab Cove is a great choice!
We had a great time with this Class of 2016 Oakland Tech graduating senior, one week before she left for her freshman year at Cal Poly. She booked a deluxe 2 hour session to make sure there would be enough time for the studio shots she wanted, as well as a few outdoor locations.
To make the most of our time, we began the session in the studio where we shot indoors and took advantage of a few of the cool, urban backdrops in the neighborhood.
We did the second half of the session at one of our favorite parts of the Alameda coastline over on Bay Farm Island. This is a great location because there is easy access to the grassy banks along the lagoon, as well as dramatic sunset views.
This was such an amazing shoot to close out the 2016 senior portrait season, and it definitely got us excited to work with our 2017 graduates!
Newborns are so tiny and sweet that it should be no surprise they are one of our favorite types of sessions to do. We recommend newborn photography sessions be scheduled within the first 14 days after birth to be sure we capture that smallest stage of life as babies grow and change so fast!
We got to photograph Baby Ryan at 12 days old and had the best time with this little cutie. He would drift in and out of sleepiness so we were able to get a nice mix of sleeping and awake shots.
Our newborn photography sessions can be booked both in home/on location, as well as at our Alameda studio. We photographed Ryan over the winter, making him our first newborn session at the new studio – pretty exciting! The new room is great for photographing babies – big enough to work in, but small enough to warm up easily for baby’s comfort. Plus a comfy couch for mom and dad to chill on while we work!
For this shoot we mainly focused on the classic, traditional unclothed baby, but we also spent some time photographing Ryan in this adorable outfit his mom crocheted.
We also took time to get some sweet family photos.
Ryan and his family were so lovely to photograph and we are so glad they chose us to document his first days!
TIPS FOR A GREAT NEWBORN SESSION:
Schedule early! Ideally the session would be held within the first 7-14 days for maximum newborn squishyness!
Warm the room! A nice balmy 80 degrees is best since baby will be spending a lot of time naked, and we want them to be comfy and warm. If we are working at your home please start to preheat your space 30 minutes before our arrival. This is probably THE most important tip for a great session.
Personalize your photo shoot! We always encourage you to bring cute outfits, hats, headbands, blankets, and other personal mementos to incorporate into our session.
Relax! There is nothing your baby will do that we haven’t seen before so don’t stress if your baby fusses, needs to take a break to feed, or pees on us. We use natural, gentle posing techniques so your baby will be comfortable. Their safety is our top priority so you can sit back and relax, knowing you are right there if we need you!
With a high fashion concept, and super dramatic location, we knew that this family portrait session was going to be amazing. The photographs did not disappoint! We met at Gray Whale Cove on an overcast afternoon, which acted as a natural soft box to give us a very flattering light. As promised, the family showed up dressed to the nines. Their impeccable styling combined with the breathtaking landscape was the perfect recipe for some pretty amazing family portraits!
During the shoot we photographed the entire family, some of just the kids, as well as some striking portraits of mom and dad!
We continued the shoot through dusk and were rewarded with high drama, vivid imagery.
We love ending our family portrait sessions with a little unscripted fun time where everyone can get their silly on. 🙂
We love romance, so it was so special to be asked to photograph this proposal. Erik really wanted Ashley to be surprised, so with the help of her sister, roommate, and the staff at the Kate Spade store in Walnut Creek, CA he arranged a very special shopping trip for her.
When they arrived at the store, the staff told Ashley that she was the 50,000th customer and was being lavished with gifts!
Finally, a staff member brought out the last gift…
In my front yard there is a giant acacia tree that blooms every January, which looks and smells heavenly. If you’ve been following my photography for a while you may all ready know this, but every year when the tree is in bloom I like to do a photo shoot with the beautiful mimosa flowers.
This year I collaborated with model Adrianna Reloba and makeup artist Lena Chavez on the shoot, which was fabulous! Adrianna did not miss a shot, and Lena’s work was flawless as usual. There were so many great shots to choose from. A few favorites are featured here. Enjoy!
If you’ve been thinking about treating yourself to a boudoir session, or wanted to give your special someone some beautiful, intimate artwork this year for Valentine’s Day, now is the time! We’re offering a boudoir special through 2/14/15, which includes a beautiful, high quality 5×5 seamless bind book of your favorite photos from the session, all perfected and beautifully presented.. (Choose your favorites before 2/2 for delivery by Valentine’s Day.)
The seamless bind book that comes with this package is something we are really excited about. Because of the seamless design, your photos can be printed across the spread of two pages, without losing any of the image in the page gutter. The pages are thicker than than on a coffee table book and are made of photographic paper. They are really beautiful books, and the small 5×5 size makes a very sweet gift.
I’m very pleased to be able to share new images from my Arboreal Entropy series with you! This series has turned into a long term project for me, and I plan to expand upon the series and continue adding new pieces. These are the most recent additions that I had printed and standout mounted for display at The Jingletown Jazz Room at Ale Industries during December 2014.
These photos are printed on metallic finish photo paper, and are ready to hang – no frame needed! They’re about 3/4″ thick and the edges are finished with a thin black plastic veneer. The standout mount results in a really slick looking piece of art and I love how it compliments these images.
For a limited time the first edition standout mounted prints of these new images are available for sale through the Art By Clayton shop on Etsy. If you are local and would prefer, you can also contact the studio purchase and pick up in person.
