Retouching

Any really good photographer will agree: taking the picture is the easy part! The real magic in creating consistently beautiful images is in post-production. By balancing the color, exposure, removing blemishes, altering distracting elements, and adding artistic effects, we make the image truly representative of our ideal vision.

Here are some retouching examples which show what goes into bringing a "raw" image to perfection. Roll over the image with your cursor to see the before and after versions of these pictures:

The Golfer:

This picture suffers from few problems. First, there is a lack of contrast. Also, the blue cube is distracting. And you may notice his shirt is a little short!

All suprisingly easy fixes.

    High School:

I shot this photograph from the roof of a house across the street from the school. Unfortunately, the telephone pole was in the way.

Interestingly, El Cerrito High School has been rebuilt, and the view you see here has changed completely.

    Go Gauchos!

      Coming Down the Aisle:

In this image it was impossible to get the depth of field needed for both the flowers and the bride and her father to be in focus. So I shot the picture twice quickly and merged the two in post-production.

I added some creative styling to this one to enhance the drama and artistry.

        Widget:

It's amazing how much more interesting a simple product shot can look with a little white balancing and contrast adujustment!

What the heck is this thing, anyway?

          Family Photo:

The client requested a few changes be made to this picture. Can you find all five?
